How to enjoy seeing Buddha statue

Date : We 'll try to arrange the date at your convenience. Call us first!

Why is this Buddha so angry? How many arms stretch from this one?
How do you know that this is Yakushi and not Shakyamuni?
Even not many Japanese can answer these questions.
Because there are so many different kinds of statues and in order to tell what they are, we have to know the clues that are carved in each statue.
So, we begin this class with studying those clues and after you learn these, you will find seeing Buddhas a completely different experience, and it will take you to a new journey of sharing part of culture that the Japanese cherish.

The instructor,Mr.Masahide Matsuoka,is a member of curatorial staff at the Ueno Royal Museum. When in primary school, he took a keen interest in artifacts of Buddhism ceremonies displayed in the window of a craft shop. After he accomplished a remarkable career as a news reporter at Fuji Tlevision Network, he took a correspondence course of Museology and a strong interest in Buddhism and its art came back. He often visits temples mainly in Kyoto and Nara to see Buddha statues.
